Chapter 26

A fleet of servants had arrived and was quick to break the stalls down, moving all merchandise out of the courtyard, clearing it for the duel. Circles were drawn up, creating an area of combat. If anyone were to exit the circle, the duel was to cease until they returned. A curious custom, but this was known as “Arena Fighting”, something quite popular in Ardor.

Standing in the red circle, 30 feet across from me was Talmidge. The tall, black-haired man did not look as if he were here to play games. While the various sorcerers I had met were playful with their power, vastly underestimating me, this man seemed different. He was cold and calculating. Somewhat familiar, in a strange way. Almost as if I had met him before.

There was a lot riding on Talmidge’s shoulders. It was clear that the Syndicate’s approval was worth voluntarily giving up their numerical advantage in a fight. What was unclear, however, was whether Mirna was trying to help me, or if she truly was auditing not only the honor of the Sorcerer King, but also their power.

I could make a few conclusions based on this situation. The first was that Talmidge would shoot to kill as quickly as possible. He had an audience of one and wanted to impress her more than anything. Second, Talmidge was the strongest of the group, for he chose to go first and neither of his lackies seemed surprise at this choice. This also meant that he was their superior officer in some way. Third, and perhaps most importantly, he was the kind of man who took any advantage he could to win.

The only reason he was fighting me one-on-one was due to the demands of the Syndicate woman. Otherwise, he would have had me killed by as many people as he could muster. He would not underestimate me like my other opponents had. He would come at me with everything he had and would make every tactically-sound decision.

These were the conclusions that leapt to my mind as I stepped in the blue circle marked for me. Talmidge said nothing. He merely stood tall. Motionless. Calm as could be. I, on the other hand, was a mess, sweating profusely from both the adrenaline and the heat of the day. I had to be careful here. Spending too much of my mana in one battle meant I’d be in real trouble the next one. Fighting three duels in succession was going to be hard. But the silver lining was that if I could fell the first one, the hardest part would be out of the way.

“I don’t know what foolishness you’re trying to prove,” Lendra’s voice whispered to me through the use of a spell. “But you will do nothing by facing them. Even if you defeat the three of them, what good do you hope to accomplish?”

“You don’t win a war by defeating the king alone,” I replied, waiting for the duel officiant to step into position.
